The company Bimota was founded in 1973 and it is currently based in the Italian seaside town Rimini close to San Marino. Until 1973 the company was known as a manufacturer of heating and air-conditioning systems and was located in the Romania region in central Italy. With the growing product range, the production of specialized motorcycles was launched. They were made for local enthusiasts and later also for the wide public. The name Bimota is based on the surnames of the three founders - Bianchi, Morri and Tamburini. Their goal was to produce unique motorcycles in limited series, using the latest technologies. The engine donors were Japanese and Italian superbikes. Most Bimota models are marked with a code consisting of the first letter of the engine manufacturer name and the letter B standing for Bimota – HB- Honda engine, SB- Suzuki engine etc. In 1980s the designer Marconi devoted his final university project to Tesi1, the first machine without the classic front fork, before starting to work for Bimota. He also created the machine DB5 in 2001. The cooperation with Ducati started in 1990 and has been going on ever since, giving names to DB or lately BB with BMW engines.
